Why Moisture Content Matters in Shisha Charcoal Cubes
Connect the moisture result to the tested sample, its handling and its packaging. Review ignition observations and received condition before comparing production data with destination results.
Sample handlingPack and storageReceived condition

Shisha charcoal moisture content
Compare the tested condition, not just the percentage.
A production report, a sealed receipt sample and an opened trial pack may represent different conditions. Keep their identities and handling histories visible.
Use a comparable method and basis, then connect the result to packaging, storage and the agreed acceptance point.
Moisture review worksheet
Document the journey from sealed pack to tested sample.

Comparison rule: align method, basis and sample condition before ranking percentages. Record dispatch and receipt evidence separately.
01 · Measurement
A moisture result describes a sample at a particular time.
Moisture content expresses the measured water-related mass fraction under the stated test method and reporting basis. Read the value together with the material identity, test date and handling history. A result from a production sample does not automatically describe an opened pack weeks later.
The public overview of ISO 18134-1:2022 describes an oven-drying reference method for solid biofuels. It reports as-received moisture against the total test-sample mass, on a wet basis. Ask which method the laboratory actually used; a reference in this article does not establish Unimax compliance with that method.
A specification maximum and a measured batch result serve different purposes. The first defines an agreed requirement; the second describes tested material. Confirm both their scope and the point at which acceptance applies, such as dispatch or receipt, before treating two documents as contradictory.
02 · Ignition behavior
Include moisture in the investigation, then test the actual setup.
Water carried by charcoal needs heat to evaporate during burning. FAO’s general charcoal guidance identifies this as a loss of heating power. This explains why moisture belongs in a technical review, but does not provide a shisha-specific ignition-time prediction.
For a buyer trial, record time to the agreed fully lit condition using the same starter, cube dimensions, quantity and procedure. Document pack opening and sample handling alongside the observation. Evaluate the sample in suitable conditions following the equipment and supplier instructions.
If one sample lights more slowly, investigate moisture with the other differences rather than assigning a cause immediately. Cube size, material characteristics, equipment and operating conditions also need context. A low moisture figure alone does not establish clean ignition, a particular burn duration or overall product quality.
03 · Storage and pack sealing
Review the barrier and the way the pack is used.
Charcoal can take up moisture from humid air, as described in FAO’s general charcoal guidance. Its historical figures are not ideal ranges for finished coconut shisha cubes. The practical buyer question is how the offered product is protected throughout the agreed storage and distribution conditions.
Ask about the actual inner pack material, sealing arrangement, closure after opening and recommended storage. An outer carton and an attractive pack photograph do not establish moisture-barrier performance. If a packaging performance claim matters to the order, request evidence relevant to that material and seal.
At receipt, record damaged packs, punctures, open seals and visible wetting. Store according to the supplier’s guidance and retain the pack identity. An intact-looking seal is useful evidence of condition, but is not a laboratory result or a guarantee of zero moisture change.
04 · Ocean transit
Record the journey without assuming it proves the cause.
For an importer, compare the product’s condition at dispatch and receipt. Retain loading and receipt dates, relevant shipment identity, packaging revision and any recorded wetting or damage. Ask how the supplier’s proposed protection addresses the expected transit and destination storage conditions.
When available, shipment temperature or humidity records can provide context. They do not independently reveal the moisture inside every pack. A long ocean journey is an exposure history to investigate, not proof that the cubes absorbed a particular amount of water.
If received results differ from production data, review the lot match, test method, sampling, packaging condition and handling between the two measurements. Separate a dispatch report from a destination result. Establish what each actually represents before discussing corrective action or acceptance.
05 · Sample handling
Keep as-received material distinct from conditioned material.
Record when the pack was opened, how the sample was selected, its storage container, exposure before testing and any conditioning. Follow the laboratory’s handling instructions so the sample remains suitable for the intended measurement. Ask the laboratory to document the tested condition.
If the question is the condition on arrival, heating or deliberately drying the sample before testing changes that question. Keep an as-received sample separate from material conditioned for another agreed comparison. Do not label a pre-dried or exposed sample as unchanged receipt evidence.
A supplier’s sealed retained sample and a buyer’s opened trial pack may have different histories even when their lot is identical. That difference does not settle responsibility. It shows why both parties need sample identity and handling records to interpret the results.
06 · Mass and reporting basis
Water contributes to received mass; define what the number means.
For a wet-basis moisture percentage, the denominator includes the water in the test sample. A dry-basis percentage uses a different denominator. Keep the basis visible and ask the report issuer to clarify any conversion needed for a comparison.
More received mass does not by itself prove more dry charcoal material. For technical or commercial comparisons, distinguish net product mass from carton or pack weight and clarify the agreed mass and moisture requirements. Do not infer compliance from cube count or the shipping weight alone.
Do not turn one cube’s weight change into a batch moisture result without the applicable sampling and test method. Keep practical weighing observations separate from the report. Ask about sampling and precision if a small difference would decide acceptance.
07 · Acceptance
Resolve the evidence gap before ranking suppliers.
Use the worksheet to identify what is confirmed, different or pending. Ask for the current approved specification relevant to the offered grade and order. This guide does not invent a universal ideal range or reproduce an unverified Unimax moisture value.
Review moisture alongside dimensions, physical condition, ash evidence, ignition observations and the intended usable heat window. Meeting the moisture requirement clears one criterion; it cannot independently prove the quality or reliability of the whole product.
If a receipt concern remains, retain sample and report references and agree the next review with the supplier and laboratory. Record the decision against the order’s acceptance criteria, including the measurement point. That record is more useful for repeat orders than an unexplained percentage in a comparison spreadsheet.
Connect the result to the right product evidence.
Read the specification sheet and plan identified sample evaluation. Review current shisha product information and factory and quality evidence for the offered scope.
Technical references and scope
ISO 18134-1:2022 — Solid biofuels: moisture content reference method provides the public method overview. FAO — Using charcoal efficiently, section 10.1.1, discusses moisture uptake, mass and heating in general charcoal.
These sources explain measurement and general moisture behavior. Their scope does not establish a finished shisha-cube ideal range, a transit performance guarantee or supplier compliance. The pack, transit and trial checks here are buyer review steps; conclusions require identified product evidence.
Before interpreting a moisture result
Why can received moisture differ from production data?
Sample identity, methods and handling may differ; storage and exposure may also change the condition. Review the records before assigning a cause.
Does slower ignition prove excessive moisture?
No. It is an observation to investigate alongside moisture evidence, cube characteristics, starter and procedure.
Should a receipt sample be dried first?
Follow the laboratory’s instructions for the intended test. Pre-drying changes the sample condition and cannot describe unchanged as-received material.
Does a sealed carton guarantee moisture protection?
No. Review the actual inner pack, seal and relevant evidence. Appearance alone does not establish barrier performance.
