Fixed carbon in shisha charcoal
Read the complete analysis before ranking the percentage.
The fixed-carbon number depends on the analytical inputs and reporting convention. Check the panel and basis before treating it as comparable evidence.
Use laboratory information alongside identified sample trials and the acceptance requirements for your order.
Illustrative arithmetic only
One sample, two denominators.
These invented figures are not Unimax specifications, laboratory results or recommended ranges. They illustrate a conventional panel with moisture-corrected volatile matter.
| Panel component | As received (%) | Dry basis (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture | 6.00 | Excluded |
| Ash | 3.00 | 3.19 |
| Volatile matter | 15.00 | 15.96 |
| Fixed carbon | 76.00 | 80.85 |
As received: 100 − 6 − 3 − 15 = 76% fixed carbon.
Dry basis: 76 ÷ (100 − 6) × 100 = 80.85% fixed carbon. Ash and volatile matter must also be expressed on the dry basis.
The higher dry-basis percentage comes from excluding moisture from the denominator. It does not represent a different product or establish better session performance. Ask the report issuer for the conversion appropriate to the actual test panel.

01 · Definition
Fixed carbon belongs to a proximate-analysis panel.
In conventional proximate analysis, fixed carbon is calculated by difference after accounting for moisture, ash and volatile matter on the relevant common basis. It represents the remaining fraction under that analytical convention. FAO’s charcoal guidance explains this difference approach; it is not a direct elemental-carbon measurement.
Proximate analysis and ultimate analysis answer different questions. The former reports moisture, ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon; elemental analysis reports elements such as carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. USGS describes that distinction for coal. It supports the terminology here, not a specification or quality benchmark for shisha cubes.
Ask the supplier or report issuer whether the listed figure is a measured-panel calculation or a specification minimum. A minimum is an acceptance requirement; a result belongs to the identified tested material. Keep that distinction visible when reviewing the proposed grade.
02 · Reporting basis
The same material can have different percentages on different bases.
An as-received percentage includes moisture in its mass denominator. A dry-basis percentage excludes it. Fixed carbon expressed on a dry basis can therefore be numerically higher without a change in the dry material. The illustration below shows that denominator effect.
Keep dry basis, as-received basis and any other stated basis labelled separately. A dry ash-free figure also excludes ash and should not be ranked directly against a dry or as-received result. Ask the laboratory to clarify or provide values on the agreed common basis.
When a report contains moisture measured at a different stage from the analytical sample, ask how the issuer performed the basis calculation. Do not combine figures from different lots, test conditions or documents because they happen to sum to a plausible number.
03 · Complete panel
Read the subtraction and its inputs together.
For a conventional as-received panel whose moisture, ash and moisture-corrected volatile matter are all expressed on that basis, fixed carbon equals 100 minus their sum. On a consistent dry basis, moisture is excluded and fixed carbon equals 100 minus dry-basis ash and volatile matter.
The illustration is arithmetic, not a testing procedure or an ideal composition. Request the laboratory’s actual calculation convention and methods. If a volatile-matter field already includes moisture, subtracting moisture again would change the meaning of the panel.
Ask for the complete panel instead of accepting a single percentage on a sales sheet. Check identity, basis and rounding before looking at closure to 100%. Because fixed carbon is calculated by difference, a neat total does not independently validate sampling or the accuracy of the input tests.
04 · Methods and evidence
A standard name needs a result and a scope.
The public overview of ISO 18123:2023 identifies a method for determining volatile matter in solid biofuels. It does not establish that a supplier used that method or that any reported fixed-carbon value is verified. Ask which methods and editions actually apply to each input.
Request the report number, test date, grade, dimensions, sample reference and relevant lot. Keep any declared method modifications and sample conditioning with the record. Clarify whether the document represents an offered grade, an identified production lot or a retained sample.
If a small fixed-carbon difference decides acceptance, ask about precision, rounding, sampling and the uncertainty of the input results where available. Missing detail remains an evidence gap. It is not automatically a product failure or proof that the larger printed number is better.
05 · Session performance
Test the outcomes the buyer needs.
A fixed-carbon figure is useful technical information, but it does not independently establish ignition time, usable heat duration, residue handling, cube strength or operator workload. Review evidence for those outcomes separately using identified samples.
For practical evaluation, keep cube size and quantity, starter procedure, heat-management setup and observation schedule consistent. Record the agreed fully lit condition, usable heat window, cube condition and residue observations. Keep the sample’s pack opening and handling history with the trial.
If a result differs between samples, document the observation before asserting a cause. A percentage difference and a session difference can occur together without proving that fixed carbon alone caused the outcome. Separate the laboratory panel from the trial conclusion.
06 · Buyer comparison
Compare like-for-like evidence before comparing the headline.
For each offered grade, place the complete panel beside its methods, basis and material identity. Keep current specification limits separate from measured sample results. Compare against the same agreed criterion and measurement point.
A higher number on one sheet may reflect a different basis or a different balance of panel inputs. Request clarification before treating it as an advantage. Even a valid like-for-like comparison clears only the criterion it measures.
Include physical condition, dimensions, packaging requirements, relevant sample performance and supplier evidence in the order review. This guide does not invent a universal ideal fixed-carbon range or reproduce an unverified Unimax value. Request current information for the exact product being offered.
07 · Decision record
Make the unresolved question explicit.
Use the worksheet to mark each item confirmed, different or pending, with the supporting document and next action. If the reporting basis is missing, ask for it before ranking suppliers. If performance evidence is missing, agree an identified trial.
When a specification and report appear inconsistent, first check grade, lot, date, limit versus result and basis. Ask the issuer to reconcile the relevant figures. Keep the answer with the order record so future comparisons use the same convention.
Record the decision against the agreed product and acceptance criteria. Retain the panel and trial references for repeat-order review. Fixed carbon can be part of that decision without becoming a one-number quality score.
Connect the result to the right product evidence.
Read the specification sheet and plan identified sample evaluation. Read the ash-content guide and moisture and handling guide for the related inputs. Review current shisha product information and factory and quality evidence for the offered scope.
Technical references and scope
FAO — Using charcoal efficiently, section 10.1.3, explains the difference approach in general charcoal. USGS — Coal classification glossary distinguishes proximate and ultimate analysis in coal terminology. ISO 18123:2023 — Solid biofuels: determination of volatile matter provides the public method overview.
These sources explain analytical concepts. Their industrial or general-fuel scope does not establish an ideal shisha-cube composition or supplier compliance. The arithmetic example is illustrative; the buyer worksheet and session checks support evaluation of identified product evidence.
Before comparing fixed-carbon figures
Is fixed carbon the same as total elemental carbon?
No. Fixed carbon in proximate analysis is a difference-based fraction. Elemental carbon belongs to a different analytical determination.
Why can dry-basis fixed carbon be higher?
Dry basis excludes moisture from the denominator. A higher percentage can therefore describe the same material on a different basis.
Does a panel adding to 100% prove the report is accurate?
No. A difference-based fixed-carbon figure makes arithmetic closure expected. It does not independently validate sampling or the input tests.
Does higher fixed carbon guarantee longer burn time?
No. Request identified trial evidence with a consistent setup and agreed performance criteria.
