Shisha charcoal calorific value

Make the values comparable before ranking them.

Energy units, gross or net convention, reporting basis and sample condition all belong to the number. An unexplained percentage difference is not a procurement conclusion.

Keep the laboratory comparison separate from the useful heat observed in the intended HMD or foil setup.

Unit illustration only

Different printed numbers can describe the same value.

6,000 kcal/kg (thermochemical) × 4.184 = 25,104 kJ/kg = 25.104 MJ/kg.

These invented figures are not Unimax specifications, test results or recommended ranges. The conversion changes only the units. Gross or net designation, basis and material identity must still match before comparing reports.

Comparison rule: align units, gross or net designation, method, basis and material identity. Keep the application trial in a separate evidence record.

01 · What is measured

Calorific value is fuel energy per unit mass under stated conditions.

A calorific-value report describes energy released under the analytical convention used for the fuel. Read the number with its units, gross or net designation, reporting basis and method. It does not directly describe the heat delivered to the buyer’s bowl or the number of useful session minutes.

The public overview of ISO 18125:2017 describes a bomb-calorimeter determination of gross calorific value for solid biofuels at constant volume. It also addresses calculated net values. Ask what method and edition the report issuer actually used; this reference does not establish supplier compliance.

Distinguish a specification requirement from a measured result for identified material. Keep the offered grade, sample or lot and date with the value. A large number on an undated sales sheet is not interchangeable with a relevant laboratory report.

02 · Units

Convert the units without changing the underlying claim.

Common energy-per-mass units include MJ/kg, kJ/kg and kcal/kg. One MJ/kg equals 1,000 kJ/kg. For the thermochemical calorie convention, one kcal/kg equals 4.184 kJ/kg. NIST’s conversion guide identifies that convention; ask the issuer if the calorie definition is unclear.

Unit conversion alone does not align gross and net values, reporting bases or sample condition. First record each field separately, then convert compatible values into one common unit. Preserve the original report value and label beside the converted figure.

The illustration below shows two unit labels describing the same energy-per-mass value. Neither printed number is better because it is larger. Do not add precision to the comparison that the original measurement or rounding does not support.

03 · Gross versus net

The water convention is part of the result.

Gross calorific value includes the combustion-water condensation convention; net calorific value treats that water as vapor under its stated convention. Keep GCV or HHV and NCV or LHV clearly identified, including constant-volume or constant-pressure labels where reported.

Do not convert gross to net by subtracting an arbitrary percentage. Request the laboratory’s calculation and required inputs for the applicable method and basis. An unlabelled heating-value figure remains unresolved until the issuer clarifies what it represents.

Compare gross with gross or net with net under compatible reporting conditions. If one supplier provides only gross and another provides net, request a comparable report or calculation. The difference in labels is an evidence issue to resolve before ranking the products.

04 · Basis and sample condition

A dry sample and an as-received sample answer different questions.

Confirm whether the reported value is on a dry basis, an as-received basis or another declared basis. Moisture changes the mass denominator and is relevant to interpretation. Ask the issuer to supply a comparable basis with the relevant moisture information rather than silently mixing dry and received results.

Record sampling, pack opening, storage, exposure and any conditioning before analysis. A prepared laboratory sample and a buyer’s opened trial pack may have different histories. Identify the tested condition and the point at which the order’s acceptance requirement applies.

Keep results from different lots or grades separate. If the offered product differs from the report material, ask for relevant evidence. A unit conversion cannot repair a mismatch in material identity, and a basis conversion cannot establish the current condition of an unrelated pack.

05 · Useful heat

Fuel energy is only one part of application performance.

Useful heat in an HMD or foil setup depends on the actual arrangement and how heat reaches the intended load. The laboratory energy-per-mass result is not a direct measurement of that transfer, temperature pattern or usable heat window.

For an identified trial, keep cube dimensions and quantity, starter procedure, device configuration and observation schedule consistent. Record the agreed fully lit condition, usable heat criterion, cube movements and replacement points. Note charcoal mass where relevant to the comparison.

If temperatures are measured, record the instrument, measurement location and timing. If the evaluation is an operator observation, label it accordingly. Do not present an unmeasured heat-transfer percentage or predict session duration from the calorific-value figure alone.

06 · Comparison checklist

Place laboratory evidence and session evidence in separate fields.

Use the checklist to resolve units, value type, method, basis and sample identity first. Request clarification on rounding, precision and uncertainty where available if a small difference would decide acceptance. Missing details remain pending until resolved.

Review the complete technical picture alongside the calorific value: dimensions, moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon and physical condition as relevant to the order. Then review practical observations against the buyer’s intended application.

This guide does not invent a universal ideal range or reproduce an unverified Unimax calorific value. A higher compatible laboratory result may satisfy one technical criterion, but does not independently prove easier ignition, better residue handling or overall supplier reliability.

07 · Decision and follow-up

Ask for the document that answers the order question.

Request the current verified specification or technical document for the offered grade and requirement. Ask the supplier to identify any measured value, specification limit and calculated net value separately. Keep the issuer’s clarification with the comparison record.

If a trial does not meet the intended usable-heat criterion, send the identified sample and setup record alongside the laboratory report. Agree what further evaluation would answer the concern. Do not assume the calorific value is the cause without supporting evidence.

Record acceptance against the agreed criteria and measurement point, with unresolved items and follow-up owners. Retain both report and trial references for repeat orders. That creates a comparison a procurement team can review rather than a ranking built from incompatible numbers.

Technical references and scope

ISO 18125:2017 — Solid biofuels: determination of calorific value provides the public method overview and gross/net context. NIST Guide to the SI — Appendix B.8 conversion factors supports the thermochemical calorie conversion.

These references support the measurement and unit discussion. They do not establish a shisha-specific ideal range or supplier compliance. The example is illustrative; useful-heat conclusions require identified application evidence.

Before comparing calorific-value reports

Can kcal/kg and MJ/kg be compared?

Yes, after a valid unit conversion and confirmation that value type, basis, method and material scope are compatible.

Can gross and net values be ranked directly?

No. Request like-for-like values or a relevant laboratory calculation with its inputs and convention identified.

Does higher calorific value guarantee longer useful heat?

No. Evaluate the actual setup against the agreed usable-heat criterion with identified samples and consistent conditions.

What if the reporting basis is missing?

Keep the comparison pending and ask the issuer whether the value is dry, as received or on another declared basis.
