Shisha charcoal cracks and chips
A chip is an observation. Its cause needs evidence.
Edge chips, surface cracks, structural fractures and loose fines describe different findings. Keep them identifiable rather than treating every visible imperfection as the same defect.
Photograph receipt and pack condition, use an agreed sampling rule, then review the intended function and technical evidence.
Damage inspection record
Build a record the buyer and supplier can review.

Comparison rule: retain the inspected population, category definitions, original photographs and raw observations. Investigate possible contributors separately from the acceptance decision.
01 · Observation categories
Describe what is visible before deciding what it means.
An edge chip is localized missing material at a corner or edge. A surface crack is a visible line or opening on a face. A structural fracture involves a split through the piece or separation into fragments. These working descriptions help a buyer record observations; they are not universal acceptance classes.
A small chip may be treated as cosmetic only when the agreed criteria and intended function support that classification. Check remaining shape, dimensional measurement, handling and pack fit. Do not label every chipped cube acceptable, or every visible line unusable, without relevant evidence.
Transit breakage describes damage established in the transport or receiving context, not a unique fracture shape. A broken cube seen after delivery does not prove when it broke. Record loose fines separately: powder or small fragments in a pack may coexist with chips or fractures, and their origin needs investigation.
02 · Receiving record
Photograph the packaging before opening it.
Record receipt date, shipment reference, grade, pack and lot identifiers where available, and who inspected the goods. Photograph the outer carton, marks, seals and relevant sides before opening. Note dents, crushing, tears, shifted contents or visible wetting as observations, with their exact location.
Open the pack with minimal disturbance and document the arrangement before removing pieces. Keep an overview that shows which carton and inner pack are involved. Photograph any loose material in place rather than immediately tipping it away; note anything that spills or is lost during inspection.
Give selected cubes identifiers and photograph each relevant face with a scale in the same plane. Include close views of chips or cracks and a wider image for orientation. Use consistent lighting and retain original files. Photographs can document visible condition, but cannot establish hidden crack depth, moisture content or mechanical durability.
03 · Classification and sample scope
Keep individual observations and the inspected population.
Agree how packs and pieces are selected, the sample count and the population represented. Use a repeatable selection method rather than collecting only visibly damaged pieces and presenting them as a representative defect rate. Keep targeted investigation samples separate from routine receipt samples.
Use the same working category definitions for all inspectors, with example photographs where helpful. Record multiple observations on one cube when they coexist. If a single primary category is needed for a count, define the priority rule so the team does not count one piece as several different pieces.
Keep the per-piece record, inspected total and category totals. Any percentage must identify its denominator and whether it represents pieces, packs or mass. A photograph collection alone does not provide a valid shipment-wide defect percentage. Borderline classifications should remain marked for review until resolved.
04 · Chips, fractures and loose fines
Measure the agreed feature without creating more damage.
For an edge chip, record location and the agreed measure of missing material or remaining geometry. Retain the original cube dimensions where measurable and identify readings affected by damage. Do not reconstruct a missing corner from the nominal size and present that estimate as an actual reading.
For a crack, record visible length, opening where reliably measurable, faces affected and whether fragments have already separated. Avoid bending, squeezing or breaking the sample to infer hidden depth during a visual receipt check. Any destructive investigation needs its own procedure and a retained pre-test record.
For loose fines, define the particle-size cutoff, separation method, balance and mass denominator before comparing results. Keep fines and larger broken fragments separately identified if the procedure requires it. An informal shake, hand-picked powder or unspecified sieve does not produce a comparable technical result.
05 · Potential contributors
Treat appearance as a starting point for investigation.
Pack fit may contribute to movement or concentrated contact during handling: review actual cube dimensions, dividers, liners, free space and carton condition. Handling or shipment shocks may be relevant where records support them. Compare packing photographs, dispatch evidence, receiving condition and the route history before assigning responsibility.
Moisture and conditioning may be relevant to the investigation, but visible damage does not measure moisture or establish that wetting caused a fracture. Obtain identified moisture evidence when needed. Likewise, a density figure cannot diagnose crack formation or replace a relevant strength or durability assessment.
Production, drying, packing and subsequent handling histories are possible lines of enquiry when evidence points to them. Compare retained or dispatch samples with received samples where available, keeping their different histories explicit. A similar-looking chip can have different causes; one image is not a reliable root-cause diagnosis.
06 · Function and durability
Separate inspection findings from application results.
Check whether the received geometry meets the agreed dimensional and pack requirements. Evaluate handling suitability and the intended HMD or foil arrangement with identified samples. Keep those results distinct from the visual category; a neat exterior does not prove performance, and a minor visual defect does not establish the full heat outcome.
If mechanical durability matters to the order, request the relevant test report and method. ISO 17831-2:2025 provides a method context for briquette resistance to handling and transport shocks or abrasion. A visual inspection, a squeeze by hand or an informal drop is not interchangeable with that defined test.
For any agreed handling trial, specify the procedure and record condition before and after it. Review ignition or usable heat separately under consistent application conditions. Do not infer overall quality from one damage category, a density number or a technical percentage without the complete evidence needed for the order.
07 · Acceptance and follow-up
Use agreed criteria and preserve the affected scope.
Request the current verified Unimax specification or technical document for the proposed grade and order. Ask how chips, cracks, fractures, fines and pack condition are defined and assessed, which sample plan applies, and what action follows a confirmed nonconformity.
This guide provides no universal acceptable damage rate, ideal range or unverified Unimax result. Agree cosmetic and functional criteria, inspection point and escalation responsibilities before shipment. If a received finding is unresolved, identify the affected packs and preserve the samples and packaging for review.
Send the supplier the receipt record, original photographs, selection method, raw counts or measurements and relevant handling history. Request further evidence that can answer the specific concern, then document the agreed resolution. Sorting, replacement or changes to future packing should follow identified findings rather than an assumed cause.
Connect observations to the right evidence.
Read the specification sheet and plan identified sample evaluation. Review dimensional tolerances, cube density and moisture and sample condition. Connect the findings to current shisha product information and factory and quality evidence.
Technical references and scope
ISO 17831-2:2025 — Mechanical durability of briquettes provides context for resistance to shocks and abrasion during handling and transport. FAO — Transport, storage and distribution of charcoal discusses general charcoal fragility and fines formation during handling.
The FAO discussion concerns general charcoal logistics, not a shisha cube acceptance specification. Neither reference diagnoses a received sample or establishes Unimax compliance. The photo-recording procedure here is a buyer inspection aid, not a standardized durability test.
Before deciding on cracks and chips
Is every small edge chip only cosmetic?
No. Assess it against agreed geometry, handling and application criteria before calling it cosmetic or acceptable.
Can a photograph prove a crack is structural?
A photograph records visible features. Hidden depth and mechanical integrity may need further identified inspection or testing.
Does damage after delivery prove a transit cause?
No. Compare dispatch, packaging, receipt and handling evidence before attributing when or why the damage occurred.
How should loose fines be compared?
Define selection, particle-size cutoff, separation procedure and the count or mass denominator. Preserve the raw record.
